On the GPU side, we see a big shift for MediaTek as for the first time in a long time we see the company putting aside Arm Mali GPU in favour of Imaginations new PowerVR GM 9446 GPU running at up to 970 MHz. MediaTek talks about including a “large 元” in the new chipset, however doesn’t disclose its exact size, neither talks about the L2 configurations of the CPU cores. If you’d prefer to work with three oscillators instead of the Modular’s nine, and you prefer a few knobs and dials to a maze of cables, the Mini V is a good option. Also helpful is that it won’t allow you to insert a cable where it doesn’t belong, such as linking two inputs for example, which I imagine will save novices and pros alike many hours of head-scratching in the wee hours of the morning. For example, you can insert more than one cable into any input or output, which expands the capabilities of the synth immeasurably and also allows you to make short cuts (purists will not indulge I imagine). Simulated cabling is nothing new in music software of course, but I think it’s worth noting that Arturia has done a good job of giving it an authentic feel whilst also adding in some helpful advantages over the real thing. There’s quite a few additions that weren’t in the original, too, such as Sample and Hold and an Envelope Follower that can be used on external sources. I found it particularly handy as it allows you to easily and powerfully fatten-up your tones by adding a little phase shifting, or create extra colour by tweaking the rate and scale of tuning frequencies. The Bode Frequency Shifter was one such accessory that, back in the day, could be ordered from the manufacturer to install by yourself at home (when men were men I guess). Arturia has also added new modules that they’ve either invented or that were once available as additions to the original analogue synth. The first difference users of Arturia’s original reproduction will notice is that you can now see all of the modules on screen at once (provided you’ve got the screen real-estate), which is certainly a lot better for work-flow and those periods of frenetic experimentation where you splash cables about like Jackson Pollock attacking a canvas. If you prefer leather elbow-pads to leather jackets, then this is your kind of thing. The famously imposing Moog Modular synth. Here’s a look at each of them in a bit more detail. This is just one of the numerous updates and enhancements that Arturia has made to these synths though. I first thought this was a bit gimmicky to be honest, but it actually does improve on the usual method of selecting presets, where you scroll down lengthy lists of names and categories. ![]() It offers up a virtual galaxy of presets spread out in space and represented by different shapes and colours according to their characteristics. Most of them also possess a new method of selecting between presets called the Sound Map. They are all 32- and 64-bit compatible, work in any DAW as well as in stand-alone mode, and have enough presets to keep you indoors for days. Instruments such as the Moog Modular and Mini Moog, the Prophet V and the CS-80 are responsible for some of the best music - and worst dance-moves - in history, and Arturia are making them available to a new generation of music-makers who probably haven’t touched wood-panelling in their lives.Įach of the synths sound and look pretty convincing in most regards. For the uninitiated, its all about the faithful - almost fanatical - emulation of some of the classic analogue synths that helped shape the music world over the past fifty-odd years. The V Collection 3.0 is the latest version of Arturia’s bundle of virtual analogue synths. ![]() It boasts four image mode presets – movie, football, office, and game (only available via HDMI) – plus a custom one. There are a lot of other features here you won’t find in other projectors, such as having different image mode presets and the ability to adjust the refresh rate. During my tests, it gave me two hours and 10 minutes of Disney+ viewing with brightness set at 50% and everything else, including Wi-Fi, turned on. Luckily, the Halo+ comes with a 59W battery that the brand says gives you up to two hours of playtime. ![]() Otherwise, you’re limited to only being able to use it when there is a power source. Maybe it’s just me, but having a built-in battery feels vital to a portable projector. And, I must say, I prefer this over sacrificing features like a built-in battery just to save a few bucks/quids. What you have here is a model that might be a little more expensive, but it also comes with all the right features. While many portable projectors sacrifice an integral feature or two for the sake of a lower price tag, Xgimi seems to have taken a different approach with the Halo+. The HDMI and USB ports are great for connecting other video input sources like a streaming stick or a USB drive while the 3.5mm audio jack has you covered on the audio front. There’s a good selection of ports as well, with one HDMI 2.0, one USB 2.0, and one 3.5mm audio jack. And, while its fans inside do get a little loud, they’re not loud enough to overwhelm the speakers and ruin your experience. It’s pretty good at managing the heat, staying cool even when under pressure. That leaves it to the back panel to accommodate the air vent, which is surprisingly small. ![]() It’s got a three-sided grill that’s part of its built-in speaker system, allowing its two 5W Harman Kardon speakers to deliver a 180-degree audio experience. Not that you’ll be needing to use them that much, thanks to the included remote, which comes with all the necessary controls, including a Google Assistant button and a switch that allows you to use the +/- buttons for volume adjustments and tweaks in lens focus. Even its media touch buttons on the top panel are premium – they’re responsive to the softest touch, making controlling it easy and have a slight Sonos feel to them. Made of premium materials, the Halo+ feels robust and like it will last you a lifetime of rugged adventures. I’ve found that some portable projectors are forced to readjust their focus every time the surface they’re on shakes, but this one doesn’t even so much as flinch. There were no disruptions to the projected image either. Even when I placed it on a shaky shelf, it showed no signs of shaking or wobbling. Its cuboid shape makes it incredibly compact and easy to carry, and the only thing that would make it even more portable is the addition of a built-in handle, perhaps something akin to that on the Nebula Mars II Pro.ĭespite its vertical cuboid form factor, it’s impressively stable. Measuring 113.5 x 145 x 171.5mm (4.46x5.7圆.75 inches) and weighing 1.6kg (3.53lbs), the Xgimi Halo+ might be a little bigger and heavier than other portable projectors, but it stays in that stuff-in-your-backpack domain. It’s even easier if you already have Google Play set up with all your favorite streaming apps. The remote pairing is effortless, as is downloading and installing your streaming apps. Because of its snappy performance and intuitive user interface, the initial setup is fast and pain-free. My least favorite part of testing a projector is the setup, but I must say, I didn’t mind it that much with the Xgimi Halo+.
